Module 2 Reflection

As a kindergarten teacher new to the PYP framework, Module 2 has been both enlightening and challenging as I work to integrate transdisciplinary learning, a concept-driven curriculum, and approaches to learning (ATL) into my teaching practice. One of the initial challenges I faced was shifting my mindset from a subject-based approach to a more integrated, transdisciplinary one. In kindergarten, where foundational skills like literacy and numeracy are critical, it can feel daunting to weave these into larger concepts and inquiries without losing focus on skill development. Additionally, unpacking the big ideas behind the concepts and facilitating student-led inquiries required me to rethink my role as a teacher—from being the primary source of knowledge to a guide and collaborator in the learning process.

Despite these challenges, I’ve seen notable progress. I’ve begun to appreciate how young children naturally inquire about the world around them, and I’m learning to use their curiosity as a springboard for deeper exploration. For instance, I’ve started to design learning experiences around central ideas that connect to real-life contexts, such as exploring the concept of “community” through play, stories, and art. This has helped me see how even kindergarten students can engage with transdisciplinary themes in meaningful ways.

Implementing ATL has also been a learning curve, particularly in fostering self-management and thinking skills in young learners. However, I’ve seen progress as students become more independent and reflective, even in small ways, like expressing their thoughts during circle time or working collaboratively on simple projects.

This journey has taught me that while embracing the PYP framework comes with its challenges, the focus on inquiry, concepts, and skills has the potential to create more engaging and meaningful learning experiences for my students. With time and continued professional development, I am confident that my understanding and application of the PYP will deepen, enhancing my ability to support my students in becoming curious, confident, and capable learners.
